The Small Innovative Projects in Solar (SIPS) 2023 funding opportunity will award $6.5 million for seedling R&D projects that focus on innovative and novel ideas in photovoltaics (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP). Announced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO), they are seeking projects that are and are “riskier than research ideas based on established technologies”. This topic area will support small, focused projects investigating the applicability and robustness of novel ideas in CSP. Responsive concepts include all aspects of CSP plants with thermal energy storage, as well as solar-thermal industrial process ...
Three years ago, Abengoa thermal energy storage engineer Cristina Prieto exchanged the relatively secretive world of commercial CSP for academia. Now, as the professor for a newly created thermal energy storage discipline at the School of Engineering at the University of Seville, she can be creative at the research level. Returning to academia enabled her to leverage her experience in thermal energy storage to innovate an entirely new storage concept based on four different phase-changing materials (PCM) cascaded in series. Prieto is now coordinating the EU’s $3 million, 4-year HYBRIDplus project involving three universities and four businesses, which began ...
To help propel new forms of renewable energy, the Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office has been encouraging development of next generation concentrating solar power (CSP) systems. CSP systems offer a distinct advantage over photovoltaics by enabling energy storage through means other than batteries. CSP uses a field of mirrors (heliostats) to concentrate sunlight onto a target (receiver) to irradiate a heat transfer medium. That heated medium is then used to generate electricity or drive other thermochemical reactions. Researchers at Sandia are investigating using particles (specifically, a ceramic bauxite particle) inside the receiver within a gravity-driven, tower system ...
